CENTIPEDE Septober energy - original 1971 Neon label, jazz rock monster double LP, Keith Tippett, Ian Carr, Blossom Toes
Neon NE9, 1971 UK issue, matrix nos. AGBS-0604-2E, AGBS-0605-2E, AGBS-0606-2E, AGBS -0607-4E; gatefold sleeve.
Massive experimental big band playing a composition by Keith Tippett and Julie (Driscoll) Tippett, produced by Robert Fripp and featuring a stellar line-up including half of Blossom Toes.
Cover VG A substantially sound gatefold sleeve with only mild wear to the edges; on the spine the print is perfect, the centrefold line apparent, the background discoloured; external panels have foxing discolouration, very light ring impression and some other minor light marks; internal panels look really good with just mild storage wear.
Original black poly-lined inner sleeves, both having mild creasing, sign of small sticker removal, biro markings in 3 corners.
Disc VG/VG+ Vinyl on both discs is clean and fresh looking. Disc 1 has a couple of very faint surface marks and on side 2 a scratch in the centre, causing about eight clicks. Disc 2 has slight surface marks on its second side. Slight surface marks on the label of side 4, otherwise labels fine. (N.B. The label on side 3 says ‘Side 1’.)
The sound on the discs is crisp and clear, they play without skipping or sticking; there is a scratch on side 2 as noted above; light crackle is never very far away on sides 1-3, a lot of it faint, some sporadic, some sections slightly more noticeable; side 4 has some at the beginning and end but for the most part sounds pretty free from it.
