COVER CONDITION: (AT THE TIME, PANART WAS MAKING THE COVERS IN THE U.S. SINCE THE CUBAN "CARDBOARD" INDUSTRY WAS A MESS AFTER 1959...PANART'S RAMON SABAT REMAINED IN CUBA UNTIL 1961, DOING THE PRESSINGS BUT THEN FIDEL TOOK OVER THE RECORDING STUDIOS AND CREATED FIRST THE PANART NACIONALIZADA AND THE EGREM/AREYTO LABELS!) STILL IN SHRINK FILM BUT OPENED!

CONJUNTO CHAPPOTTÍN

Vamos a insertar parte del trabajo que preparara Sergio Santana para la audición No.16 de las que celebra en su discoteca Rumbantana en Medellín, Colombia, titulada “Cuní y Chappottín, soneros mayores”. En la parte correspondiente a Cuní, transcribiremos el resto.

“Félix Chapottín Lage nació en La Habana el 31 de marzo de 1907. Hijo de Julio Chapottín, tabaquero e integrante de la agrupación de son Los Apaches y de Natalia Lage, ama de casa. A los ocho años comenzó a estudiar el cornetín con el profesor Venancio González, luego la tuba, el oboe y el bombardino y, a los doce años, ingresó a la banda infantil de Guanajuay, donde residía. Allí mismo, años después, como cornetista,

integró una chambelona –comparsa política- dirigida por su tío Margarito Lage. En 1924, como trompetista, conformó la Estudiantina Orquídea de Américo González y en 1927 pasó al ya famoso Sexteto Habanero, por invitación de Felipe Nery Cabrera y con ellos se instaló de nuevo en La Habana y grabó sus primeras participaciones en discos para el sello Víctor. A partir de ese entonces su carrera artística adquirió ribetes de fábula y leyenda y su nombre se hizo conocido, primero entre los músicos y, después en el ambiente de los degustadores del son.

Por razones económicas abandonó El Habanero y pasó sucesivamente por los sextetos Colín, Munamar de Izquierdo Ramos, Agabama y Universo de Abelardo Barroso. En 1935, al desintegrarse el Sexteto Boloña, junto a Jesús ‘Tata’ Gutiérrez organizó el Sexteto Bolero, hasta que en 1939 Mariano Osamendi y Bienvenido Granda lo incluyeron en el Sexteto La Carabina de Ases. Desaparecida esta última, integró temporalmente grupos como el Conjunto América, la Gloria Cubana, Anacaona de Concepción Castro y el Conjunto Azul de Chano Pozo. Junto a su hermano Miguel y Julio Lastre formó Los Dandy de Belén, una comparsa de carnaval en la cual participaron el tamborero Chano Pozo y la única, Rita Montaner: siento un bombo, mamita, me están llamando. Sí, sí, son Los Dandy.

En 1950 como integrante del conjunto Los Jóvenes del Cayo, dirigido por Domingo Vargas, fue llamado por Arsenio Rodríguez. Después de varios meses, contratos y decenas de grabaciones asumió la dirección del conjunto Todos Estrellas de Arsenio tras la partida de éste a Nueva York en 1951, manteniendo el mismo formato instrumental y varios de los músicos de su predecesor. A partir de entonces pasó a ser Chapottín y su Conjunto Todos Estrellas o simplemente Chapottín y sus Estrellas como sonero máximo con la voz de Miguelito Cuní.” Falleció en La Habana en 12/21/1983

Lp 2072 “Alto Songo” Incluidos todos (12) en sus respectivos discos de 78”. Este álbum tiene un error en la carátula ; da como incluido Juventud de San Leopoldo que no lo está, y en su lugar aparece Soy imperdonable. El sello interior está correcto, y con el orden verdadero.

PANART:Panart Records, the first Cuban record label, was founded in 1943 by Ramon S. Sabat..... Panart captured an era. The first cha-cha-cha on record, "La Enganadora," performed by the composer Enrique Jorrin with Orquesta America, was on Panart. Perez Prado's earliest mambos were recorded on the label. Nat King Cole made his first Spanish-language album in Panart's studio. Cuban chanteuse Olga Guillot started her solo career with Panart, and the first authentic Cuban recordings of Santeria ritual music were made on the label as well.

VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE PANART COLLECTORS:

The government had taken possession of all of the original master tapes, the old 78s, and the recording logs. Like the property that belonged to the other small Cuban record companies that had emerged by the late Fifties, the Panart catalogue was declared part of the national patrimony. For a while records continued to be sold in Cuba under the Panart name. Then they all but disappeared. But lately, as outsiders have shown a renewed interest in classic Cuban music, it seems the Cuban government has begun exploiting its stockpile of prerevolutionary recordings. This year Egrem, the state record label, released a CD featuring a jam session led by Cachao. No copyright information is given (Castro declared all copyrights void early in his tenure), but all the tracks are identical to those on the old Panart jam session recording. Even the cover photo is the same.

Julia and Galo Sabat found a record factory in Hialeah and continued to make LP and eight-track tape reissues of the label's earlier successes. Between the master copies Julia had sent out of Cuba and copies retained by the label's international affiliates, they were able to salvage 80 percent of the catalogue and make a modest living on royalties. A few titles, notably Asi Cantaba Cuba Libre (That's How Free Cuba Sang), were marketed for Miami's growing exile community. "It was pure nostalgia, that's all," Julia says with a shrug. "But the records were still selling. It was enough to live on."

Near Mint (NM)

(Jacket) If the jacket is sealed there may be some minor corner damage from storage, it may or may not have the shrink-wrap, but the jacket itself will be in pristine condition. The corners will show very little wear (there will be no fraying) and will still be somewhat pointy to the touch. The cover will show no more than very minor dents or some single creases, no full bends that will cause multiple creases/damage. There will be no visible ring wear. No writing, rips or tears on the cover or seams. No bubbling, water/mold stains or peeling of the cover in any way. The inside of the gate-fold will be in the same condition. Cutout bin punches, price stickers, staples would start being listed at the NM category and would be noted accordingly as they affect the jacket itself.

(LP) You should not hear any surface noise (snaps,crackles, pops) when you play the record. There will not be any skips or repeats. The LP will retain that just opened appearance. There may be a surface blemish or two, but they will not have any affect on the sound. There will be no warping. There will be no major blemishes, light or deep scratches. The label will be free of writing and stains. There should be no spindle marks.

Excellent (VG++)

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink-wrap but the jacket itself will still be in beautiful condition. The corners will have minimal wear (no fraying).There may be minor dents and creases . Light scratches could be on the jacket, but nothing severe. Depending on age some discolor/yellowing may show, but will not be overbearing. Ring wear should be very minimal or non-existent...no dark, full, half, or quarter rings. No writing rips or tears. No bubbling, water stains or peeling of the cover . All inner gate-folds will be in similar condition.

(LP) You should not hear any sustained surface noise (snaps,crackles, pops) when you play the record. There will not be any skips or repeats. The LP will retain its most of it's glossiness and will appear like new. There may be a few surface blemishes, or a stray light scratch that may cause a moment of crackling, but nothing prolonged, and instances of this will be few. Often this will mostly occur only at the beginning of the groove on each side where the needle dropped. There will be no warping. There will be no deep scratches. There may be minor spotting or fog, but it will not affect the sound. The label will be free of writing and stains. Minimal spindle marks.

Very Good Plus (VG+)

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink wrap. There may be some easier to see imperfections, though nothing that will detract from the overall appearance in a major way. The corners will have some wear and there may be the beginnings of fraying but not full on. Some dents/creases or scratches may be noticeable, but nothing too pronounced. There could be noticeable discolor/yellowing .There may be some minor ring wear at the top and bottom; again you would have to look for it. No writing, rips or tears. Possibly some light bubbling. No water/mold stains or peeling of the cover in any way.

(LP) There may be some blemishes, maybe a scratch or two, but nothing too deep. It will not cause the record to skip or repeat. There will be no prolonged surface noise. There may be some minor warping but it will have no affect on the listening experience at all. Chances are there will be spindle marks. A VG+ record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it.

Very Good (VG/VG-) TO BE SOLD AS IS!!!

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink wrap. There will be some easier to see imperfections, though nothing that will detract from the overall appearance in a major way. The corners will have some wear or fraying possibly causing seam splitting close to the seam. There may be split seams on any side. Usually not full side splits though. Sometimes they may be fixed by tape, sometimes not. Some dents/creases or scratches will be noticeable on the jacket, sometimes pronounced. Discolor and yellowing can be commonplace, as are smaller water/mold stains and some bubbling. There maybe a smaller tear on the cover, but nothing overly pronounced. Ring wear will certainly be pronounced. There may be some writing/defacing, but it will be minor.

(LP) There will be some blemishes, and some few scratches. They should not be at the feel-able stage though. There could be a skip or repeat, but only one or two at most. More often the deeper scratches will cause more frequent and prolonged surface noise. There may be some warping but it will not cause the needle to jump. Chances are there will be spindle marks. A VG/VG- record will obviously have been played and occasionally handled roughly by the original owner.
