If you followed Tim Burgess' listening parties on Twitter during Covid, you'll have noted that The Charlatans frontman has his finger on the pulse and doesn't much let great new music pass him by. It's this thirst for new ideas that appears to inform the new Charlatans album and they employed one of the most cutting-edge producers around in Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) to sit in at the controls. Hynes, with Spector's bespectacled frontman Fred Macpherson co-producing, has ensured that The Charlatans sound a step ahead. The iconic Stephen Street (The Smiths, the Cranberries, Blur) was also involved. Whilst the producers were new to The Charlatans, the places they recorded were entirely familiar - they headed to Rockfield Studios in South Wales to record some of the tracks. It was their first time returning there since they recorded a bulk of their classic album Tellin' Stories there. And they recorded at their own Mushroom space in Middlewich, Cheshire. It appears that the long wait for the follow up to their 2017 album Different Days is the result of some first class ideas and on evidence of the euphoric lead single, 'We Are Love', they are on the form of their life.
