1963 Original Mono first pressing of this phenomenal Jazz masterpiece, complete with the “RVG” (Rudy Van Gelder) initials stamped into the trail off areas in the dead wax on both sides. This is such an important work of Jazz that there is an independent Wikipedia entry just for this LP, which can be found here.
The cover is in very nice condition. The glossy laminate does not show any peeling away from the cover, like so many Impulse covers do. The cover is thick, sturdy, heavy and has no seam or spine splitting, no tears, and no writing. The cover’s glossy laminate retains much of its original luster, along with some light wear. The corners have only tiny dings, and there is a tiny ding on the bottom seam. The opening side where the record slides in has a bit of light wear, and there is one small drill hole near the bottom left corner. Inside the gatefold looks great.
The record is clean and has had a few plays. Under a lamp the vinyl shows some light surface marking and light scuffs. There is one long visible surface scratch on side 2, which cannot be felt on the grooves. There is one small (about 3/8”) scratch on side 1 that can be lightly felt on the grooves. This record was pressed on thick, high quality vinyl and plays through loud and strong and is a joy to listen to. You cannot beat the original Impulse Mono mix of what many consider to be some of Mingus’ finest work.
All LPs come packaged carefully in a sturdy corrugated box made specifically for mailing LPs plus a cardboard insert. The covers are placed in clear plastic record sleeves. The vinyl is removed from the cover (except for SEALED items) for shipping to prevent seam splitting during shipment.
