The Jives began as a family affair in 1967 with three hermanos named Miller, a couple of their primos named Magana, and a 32 year old tio named Tony. What started as a rec-room style affair quickly grew beyond and that and into something bigger. Not only did they offer up competition to other local combos, but they soon caught the eyes and ears of Chester Foy Lee of Tear Drop records- home to any number of South/Southeast Texas heavyweights. Foy Lee sent the boys to Corpus Christi to record their debut album, Espera Un Tantito. From this album the combo had a bit of a hit with a polka called "Mi Gordita" and found themselves touring the southwest.
The self-titled second release was probably their most anglo friendly. But by release numero three, Making Time, the Jives were again headed in the Spanish direction. The soul and R&B sounds had reached their zenith of popularity among the Chicano/Mexican/Tejano set and was on its way out. In? The traditional sounds for many. For others- like leader Charlie Miller- rawk was calling. One final album, No Tengo Dinero, found the Jives just about at their end.
