CHETTY´S LULLABY / SO CHE TI PERDERO` 7-inch, 45 rpm SINGLE by CHET BAKER featuring ENNIO MORRICONE. ORIGINAL ITALIAN PRESSING on RCA ITALIANA (PM45 3068). MEGA RARE SINGLE, issued ONLY IN ITALY, featuring CHET BAKER playing his trumpet and singing IN ITALIAN, with an orchestra conducted by ENNIO MORRICONE.

In August 1960, Chet Baker, already addicted to heroin, was arrested in Lucca, Italy, acused of forging drug prescriptions and smuggling drugs into Italy and Germany. Chet was sentenced to a year plus seven months in prison. When he was released early, in December 1961, RCA Italiana paid him ten thousand dollars for a one-year record contract, hoping to cash in on Chet´s good looks and newly aquired bad boy reputation by turning him into a pop star.

Therefore, in 1962, they put him together with Ennio Morricone to record four of Chet´s own compositions that he had written while in jail, with italian words added by Pino Maffei, founder of “Musica Jazz” magazine. These tracks were released only in Italy, on two 7-inch, 45 rpm singles.

This is THE FIRST of those singles, featuring the songs “CHETTY´S LULLABY” (written by Chet for his son) and “SO CHE TI PERDERO`”.

“CHETTY´S LULLABY” opens with a RICH BED OF FRENCH HORNS AND TROMBONES, inhaling and exhaling as BAKER´S TRUMPET soars over STRINGS. Then Chet SINGS IN ITALIAN, in the most FRAGILE, DELICATE VOICE, over MORRICONE´S SUBTLE ORCHESTRATION.

“SO CHE TI PERDERO`” opens with SHIMMERING STRINGS, followed by PIANO, GUITAR, BRASS and more STRINGS. The Italian CHOIR “THE SWINGERS” is in charge of background vocals.

JAMES GAVIN, in his 2002 book “Deep in a dream: the long night of Chet Baker” writes: “Swaddled in a blanket of strings and voices, Baker crooned of the sweetness of love and of endless nights without his beloved. He sounded more childlike than ever, his soft choirboy´s high notes seeming to float from the purest heart”.

This SUPER RARE SINGLE is one of Chet Baker´s MOST BEAUTIFUL AND EXOTIC WORKS, ranking in quality with his singing sessions with Russ Freeman. The songs were reissued in the 2003 CD “Chet is Back”, but that´s out of print already. You can buy this songs in MP3 from Itunes, but that is, of course, totally lame. Nothing comes close to the RICHNESS of this ORIGINAL ANALOG VINYL RECORDING.

So, SERIOUS CHET BAKER FANS and JAZZ COLLECTORS, DON´T SLEEP on this one, because chances are, YOU WON´T SEE IT AGAIN ANYTIME SOON. HOLY GRAIL! VERY RARE 7-INCH.

Vinyl is in VG+ condition (I played the record in its entirety and it played fine, with occasional light surface noises. There is a sticker on one for the labels. See picture). Picture sleeve is in VG condition, but still very presentable (small writting in pen on front cover, over Chet´s forehead, one sticker in front cover, four stamps: one in front cover, two in back cover and one inside the sleeve, minor creasing, bottom seam as a 1.5-inch split. See picture).
