Description
Welcome! Here is a first UK press of Chicken Shack 40 Blue Fingers Freshly Packed and Ready to Serve (Blue Horizon 7-63203). On this, the first Chicken Shack album, the lineup is Stan Webb, the lovely Christine Perfect (later McVie), Andy Sylvester, and Dave Bidwell. This is an original press on the Blue Horizon label, and the audio quality here is outstanding!
Matrix numbers and mother/stamper codes are:
Side 1: S7 63203 A2; the mother/stamper is A 5.
Side 2: S7 63203 B1; the only mother/stamper present is simply an O.
Using the Record Collector grading system, what do we have here?
Sleeve: The laminated single sleeve grades VG. The sleeve itself is very slightly bowed; nothing significant. On the front, there is VERY minor ringwear near the top, and some minor scuffing/soiling that traces ringwear near the bottom. The laminate is beginning to lift in the upper right corner, and there is laminate wrinkling in each of the other corners. In the upper left corner, the laminate shows a VERY faint indentation where someone wrote “368 Y5075” on something laying on top of the sleeve (Note: I have owned this album for many years, and never noticed this indentation until just now! It is visible only if the sleeve is turned to the light in a specific way.)
There is a stretch of wear to the top edge measuring about 2 inches (about 5 cm), with about half of that representing an actual split. The spine has a couple of tiny spots of wear to the unlaminated black surface, but is otherwise fine. The bottom edge and the edge where the record is inserted are strong.
On the (unlaminated) back of the sleeve, there is minor wear and wrinkling to each corner. There are some minor areas of surface wear near the bottom. This could be touched up with a flat black marker, but I will leave that task to you! Surprisingly, perhaps, there is no trace of ringwear at all on the back, and the matte black (save for the bottom areas just mentioned) is strong throughout. Near the bottom, the sleeve is signed “Printed and made by Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd., London, W.11. Patent Pending.”
Vinyl: The heavy early vinyl grades Excellent+, with only a couple of faint hairlines that do not impact the playback. There is only the most minor occasional crackle, truly minimal.
Labels: Both labels are strong, with minimal spindle tracking.
Inner Sleeve: This album has what I believe is its original plain white, plastic-lined inner sleeve. As seen in the photo, one side has a 0.75 inch (about 2 cm) tear at the top; that same side has a hole punched through the plastic in the center. This inner is quite bright, not at all toned.
And, in the end: Like the first two Fleetwood Mac albums, 40 Blue Fingers really epitomizes the Mike Vernon-produced Blue Horizon sound. This is an excellent example of a UK first-press with great sound quality! Please e-mail me with any questions.
