Description
ALTHOUGH this record is presented as by "THE ORIGINAL MEMPHIS FIVE," it's really a very different group:
RED NICHOLS (cornet), MIFF MOLE (trombone), DICK JOHNSON (clarinet) FRANK SIGNORELLI (piano), JOE TARTO (tuba), RAY BAUDUC (drums).
Electrically recorded in January 1926, these two sides actually are a preview of Red Nichols and his Five Pennies, whose career would properly be launched that November. "'TAIN'T COLD" and "CHINESE BLUES" are feisty and fun, with Nichols and Mole in full cry already. The Brunswick "Light Ray Electrical Process" - known to 78 collectors as the "Death Ray" process - adds a slightly overdriven, edgy, gnarly, exciting dimension to the session sound.
This original 1926 Brunswick 3039 is in E- condition. There is slight moisture damage on "'Chinese Blues," but the recording level is so bold and robust, I can hardly hear it.

I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care.
