Description

Chrome "Chrome Box" 6LP set issued by Subterranean Records and Siren Records (Sub 31) in the US, 1982. The records are divided into 2 single LP sleeves hand made by Maurizio Bianchi. ****** 6xLP:ex / 2xCov:vg+++ ****** Chrome were one of the legends of the mid-late 1970s modernistic sound. No wonder that Maurizio Bianchi was highly admirative of this band. So when the Chrome Box originally came out in 1982 M.B. decided to construct his own personal set. He took an "Carcinosi" LP sleeve and turned it inside out, elaborating the outer sleeve with original Chrome graphics. He then took a non-stamped sleeve of "Menses" and elaborated it the same way. Each LP sleeve contains 3 LPs thus creating his new version of the Chrome Box. Already the standard edition limited to 2000 copies is top rare, but the one offered here is truly unique!!! Under the innocuous name of Chrome two San Franciscans (Damon Edge: vocals, synths, etc. / Helios Creed: vocals, guitar, etc. / with part-time rhythm-section assistance by the Stench brothers of Pearl Harbor's band) created an often awesome series of pre-industrial LPs that explore a dark state of mind only hinted at by 1960s psychedelia. Taking cues from Suicide, Can, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, the Residents and anyone who ever made home tapes in their bedroom, the pair's dense, chaotic science-fiction epics are vivid vinyl nightmares (a thick blend of mechanical noises, filtered, twisted voices and fantastic, bizarre lyrics) that flesh out a frightening world both absorbing and repellent. Though conventional song structures are preserved to the point where tracks can be distinguished, Chrome's strength is its ability to create sounds of horrible beauty that transcend discrete musical units. If not as conceptually out there or as ear-splitting as the noise-mongers and goth-rockers that followed the duo, Chrome's sonic intensity is still something going strong. After the tentativeness of the first two albums, apart from early refinements, Edge and Creed pretty much stuck to the same uniquely nerve-shattering metal-drone-punk style throughout their time together. The utterly fearless are recommended to begin with the materials from the Chrome Box, a set of six albums. The original release of the Box in 1982 served as both an overview of the classic Damon Edge / Helios Creed lineup and the inclusion of some extra goodies. Four previously released albums appeared in full: "Alien Soundtracks", "Half Machine Lip Moves", "Blood on the Moon", and the compilation "No Human Allowed". Also included were "Chronicles" and "Chronicles Vol.2" containing what at the time was unreleased material from the band; those two collections were made available separately later. Damon Edge: lead vocals, dirty rhythm and lead moog liberation, moog taurus, additional synthesizers, distorted guitar, drums and electronic drums. Helios Creed: lead vocals, dirty rhythm and lead guitar, bowed guitar, backwards guitar, poly-moog, bass. John Stench: drums & electronic drums on "Blood On The Moon" and "The Chronicles I & II". Hilary Stench: bass on "Blood On The Moon" and "The Chronicles I & II" and tribal vocals on "Tribes". Special thanks to Fabienne Shine for backing vocals on "Wings Born In The Night" and lead vocals at the end of "Gehenna To Canaan" and to Betsy Hill for high drone electric cello at the end of "Gehenna To Canaan".
