CHUCK BERRY CLASSIC 1957 SINGLE – SCHOOL DAY/ DEEP FEELING COLUMBIA DB 3951
Side A: School Day [Chuck Berry]
Side B: Deep Feeling [Chuck Berry]
Original British pressing [Released in June 1957].
Both sides were produced by Leonard and Phil Chess and recorded for their company on 21st January 1957 at the Universal Recording Studios, Chicago. The session featured Fred Below on drums; Willie Dixon on bass; Johnny Johnson on piano, Hubert Sumlin on 2nd guitar and Chuck Berry on lead guitar and the vocal. The A side has been covered many times since and Chuck covered it himself in 1964 by re-writing the lyrics and re-recording it as, “No Particular Place To Go”. The B side is one of Chuck’s most interesting experiments with slide guitar. Perhaps the most notable feature is that Chess’ UK outlet, Decca [London Records], rejected these recordings so Chess leased the master-tape to EMI instead. Hence this single being issued on Columbia's Chess Series. Why this seminal rocker only reached no 24 on the UK chart while making no 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 is anybody’s guess. Nevertheless, this Columbia single is now arguably one of the most collectable of Chuck’s UK records.
