Description

This late 1958 release was an opportunity for Chuck Berry fans to get a copy of his most famous 1950s hit in the US and UK singles charts  "Sweet Little Sixteen" with an attractive red sleeve. This song was written by Chuck and was later covered by many rock ‘n rollers including Jerry Lee Lewis in 1962 and the Beach Boys in 1963. This original was recorded at 2120 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago in January 1958, where most of the Chess sessions were held from late 1957 until 1966. Chuck Berry is on vocals/guitar & supported by his “Combo”: Lafayette Leake - piano, Willie Dixon - double bass, & Fred Below - drums. This original release did not sell particularly well in UK at first so comparatively few copies of this EP were made until the early ‘60s, when the tri-centre had been replaced by a circular one.  So the tri-centre version is arguably the most collectable of Chuck Berry’s UK-issued EP records.

CHUCK BERRY “REELIN’ AND ROCKIN’ ” EP

Side One: Reelin’ And Rockin’ / Rock ‘n Roll Music

Side Two: Sweet Little Sixteen / Guitar Boogie

UK pressing (All tracks recorded Chicago 1957 and 58).

Condition:
SLEEVE: FRONT-EXCELLENT ORIGINAL & BACK-BEAUTIFULLY REFURBISHED / RECORD-EXCELLENT

This 7 inch 45 RPM EP record is the first UK pressing.  There was no American Chess equivalent.  Its condition shows that the previous owner[s] took great care of it over the last 58 years.  The playing surfaces retain all of their original vinyl shine.  The listening experience first class but there are 2 quiet clicks on the run in and at the start of “Reelin’ ‘n Rockin’ “ on Side 1 so the grading is Excellent.  Without these, the record would be graded as Near Mint.  The labels are clean with no writing on either side. The laminated front is original and the back has no lamination as per the first edition issued in 1959 [see pictures].  Nevertheless, the sleeve back is refurbished.  Hence the low start price.
