Rare original issue with avant-garde pieces from female composers Alexis Alrich, Tui St.George Tucker & Claire Polin, plus a piece from Frederick Koch.
Some info on the release: Rare original issue, released in Usa sometime in the 80's on the great Opus One label (Joel Chadabe, Ruth Anderson, Annea Lockwood, Barton McLean, Steve Birchall, Frederic Rzewski, Barre Phillips, John Cage, Harry Partch, Gordon Mumma, etc.). A great selection of avant-garde compositions from 3 female composers and one male with "Palm Boulevard" a study in harmony dedicated to Larry Polansky, an excellent piece for prepared piano & tape from Frederick Koch that uses piano preparations such as bolts, washers, weather stripping and a penny plus 2 channels of pre-recorded tape material, plus Tui St.George Tucker's String Quartet, a reasearch into microtonality.
Tui St. George Tucker was an American composer and recorder player. Her compositions often feature microtonality and are strongly influenced by early music. She developed special recorders with extra holes, as well as special fingerings for the recorder to allow for the playing of quarter tones. Her Indian Summer: Three Microtonal Antiphons on Psalm Texts for two baritones and chamber ensemble combines the use of quarter tones with a Latin text. Her works have been performed by such performers as the Kohon Quartet, the pianists Grete Sultan and Loretta Goldberg, and recorder player Pete Rose.
Frederick Koch, composer/pianist, is an ASCAP member with over two hundred works in his catalogue - seventy of which are published between twelve publishers. Koch was founder of the West Shore Concerts, which for thirty-five years brought concerts to the West Side featuring Cleveland artists and composers. He concurrently founded the Koch School of Music (now the Riverside Academy of Music) now in its 42nd season with David Blazer, Director. His teachers include in piano: Leonard Shure, Beryl Rubinstein and Arthur Loesser; in composition: Herbert Elwell, Arthur Shepherd, Henry Cowell and Bernard Rogers.
Alexis Alrich is a vibrant composer in the Bay Area. She has studied at the New England Conservatory, California Institute of the Arts and with Lou Harrison at Mills College where she received her Masters degree in music composition. Also studied with Mel Powell. She has been the recipient of numerous grants and commissions from groups such as the Park Chamber Orchestra, the American Music Center, and Contra Costa College. Her works range from the orchestral piece Avenues to the childrens opera The Snow Queen which have been performed across the United States by groups including Earplay, the Womens Philharmonic, and the Rohnert Park Chamber Orchestra. She is a member of the San Francisco Bay Area composers group Ottava which recently released a CD titled with the groups name. Alexis Alrich presents Night Air (a flute and piano duo), and Driving to Salt Lake (a clarinet, cello, and piano trio) on this new CD. Her music reflects aspects of nature combined with a tonal structure introducing melodies and themes one could hear over and over.
Claire Polin was an American composer of contemporary classical music, musicologist, and flutist. Her teachers included Vincent Persichetti, Lukas Foss, Roger Sessions, and Peter Mennin. She also studied flute with William Kincaid, with whom she collaborated on a multi-volume method of flute technique. Her works were commissioned and performed by the Seoul National Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonia, the Israel Bach Society, and the London Pro Musica Antiqua of Westminster, as well as by William Kincaid, Gordon Gottlieb, and the Gregg Smith Singers.
