Clannad became a professional band in 1975 and played their first German tour that year. By 1980 they were a very welcome feature on the continent and this set of recordings defines an era for the band. The tracks have been gathered from their first three studio albums and also look forward to their Crann Úll release later that year. The music is played with beautiful intimacy, but never beholden to the tradition. Europe loved and supported the family and you can hear the mutual affection in the Bremen concert. The band is reliant on their individual skills and their capacity to mass together when the moment needs it. A sister, two brothers and two uncles. The family from Dore: Clann As Dobhair. Conditioned by the wild coastline and by the resonance of Irish, their first language. Moya (Máire) Brennan puts it thus: “It speaks of the Donegal mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, the little harbours, sweeping beaches and the sand dunes, it is the language in which stories are bold and secrets best told.”

And when Clannad made an emotional return to the Donegal stage in October 2017, they reconnected to so many of these old songs and their momentous associations. They were singing as Gaeilge and their journey - an Turas - was powerfully met. (Stuart Bailie)

'Was heutzutage das Etikett 'Celtic Music' trägt, war zunächst einfach nur 'Clannad Music'. Es gibt wohl kein besseres Zeugnis als dieses, um den Einfluss der Band zu erklären', erläutern Clannad auf ihrer offiziellen Webseite. Der unaufhaltsame Aufstieg von Clannad nahm seinen Anfang in Leo’s Tavern, dem Pub, den Leo Brennan, Oberhaupt des Clannad –Clans, vor 50 Jahren 1968 in der irischen Gemeinde Gweedore im County Donegal übernahm. Ciaran, Pol und Maire Brennan sowie deren Zwillingsonkel Noel und Padraig Duggan spielten anfangs dort nur zum Spaß. Doch schnell entwickelte sich eine Band, deren Markenzeichen es war, die traditionelle Folklore ihrer irischen Heimat originalgetreu zu adaptieren und mit ihrem eigenen Klangkosmos zu verbinden. Clannad sangen in Gälisch, eine Sprache, die außerhalb Irlands kaum jemand kannte. Das machte die Band einerseits authentisch, andererseits bescherte es ihnen auch den Ruf, einzigartig zu sein.

Innerhalb von nur ein paar Jahren gelang es Clannad, mit „ihrem“ Sound die Welt zu erobern, die Charts anzuführen und weltweit Millionen von Tonträgern zu verkaufen. Dieser Sound hatte sich im Lauf der Jahre entwickelt, in denen sich die Band laut Moya Brennan „mit dem Reichtum unseres musikalischen und kulturellen Erbes beschäftigt hatte“. Mit dem ersten Auftritt der Brennan-Geschwister vor 50 Jahren in Gweedore begann die einzigartige Erfolgsgeschichte der Familienband, an die dieser Live-Mitschnitt von Radio Bremen aus dem Jahr 1980 zum „inoffiziellem“ Clannad-Jubiläum erinnern soll. Die Reise („Turas“) findet ihr Ziel.
