1964 CLEAN ORIGINAL FIRST PRESSING
BRITISH INVASION RAVE-UP!
THE KINKS
You Really Got Me
\ USA - REPRISE RECORDS (STEAMBOAT LABEL!) - R-6143
Clean 1964 original first pressing on the steamboat Reprise label of the sixties...
YES, a CLEAN collectible first issue of the very first KINKS album, a rough and rowdy garage/beat banging attack on the senses with the smash hit, "You Really Got Me"...
Like the Stones, the Kinks found their muse via ramshackle R & B covers. Unlike the Stones, however, the Kinks seemed to have a more melodic bent. But they were much tougher than the Beatles. And while they never would elicit the pure menace and sexuality of the blues the way the Stones would, nor repeatedly renovate pop music the way the Beatles would, they weren't exactly the middle way between the two; arguably they were the equal of either to the end of the decade, and emerged around the same time as an original band producing intricate and absorbing albums.
The Kinks. the band who put the British in the British Invasion, were influential right from the start. Their early single "You Really Got Me" introduced to the world to distortion and the power chord guitar. That famous three chord riff can be seen as the starting point of heavy rock and garage punk rock.
Led by the double-barrelled genius of the two Davies brothers - the passionate and desperate vocal delivery of a 20 year-old Ray who had yet to find his muse and with the innovative use of cutting the speaker cone on his little green amp with a razor --to get the ultimate distortion buzz -- by a then-17 year-old Dave, the Kinks recorded an all-time influential rock and roll song. If that was all they did, the song would have secured them a solid place in rock and roll history, but besides a long history of great records, the very first Kinks is an all out R&B laced garage burner that set the British Invasion on fire...
