Clifford Laconia Jordan (September 2, 1931, Chicago - March 27, 1993, Manhattan) was a jazz saxophone player. While in Chicago, he performed with Max Roach, Sonny Stitt, and some rhythm and blues groups. He moved to New York City in 1957, after which he recorded three albums for Blue Note. He also recorded with Horace Silver, J.J. Johnson, Kenny Dorham, and Max Roach. He was part of the Charles Mingus Sextet, with Eric Dolphy, during its 1964 European tour. In later years, he led his own groups, performed with Cedar Walton's quartet, and led a big band.

real sleeper from 1959, originally released by Blue Note a full year after the mono version. The quintet assembled, not your usual group of Blue Note regulars for the most-part form a cohesive unit of bop that made this LP an instant classic. Joining Jordan's tenor is Art Farmer on trumpet, Sonny Clark at the piano, George Tucker's bass and Louis Hayes behind the drums. In 1964, tenor-saxophonist Clifford Jordan did the impossible, holding his own next to the remarkable Eric Dolphy on a European tour with Charles Mingus. Jordan's distinctive tone and ability to play both inside and outside made him an underrated giant. Cliff Craft, his great Blue Note album from 1959, shows that he was already a major stylist five years earlier. Teamed with Art Farmer and Sonny Clark in a quintet, Jordan's every note is full of soul, swing and subtle surprises. He never played the expected and, inspired by his sidemen, Jordan comes up with one fresh idea after another. Not content to merely follow Sonny Rollins or John Coltrane, Clifford Jordan blazed his own original musical path, making Cliff Craft into one of the most memorable recordings of his career.
