Ahorita Vengo is the second solo release from Nortec Collective founding member Clorofila, who's built upon the Tijuana based producer ensamble's trademark mix of electronic music with Norteo and Banda music styles of the North of Mexico.
While both of these styles became maligned in recent years as the recreational music of choice of the Mexican drug cartels, Clorofila shunned the questionable lyrical content of current Banda music, and went back to the genre's instrumental origins, recording with Tambora musicians from Banda Agua Caliente in his hometown of Tijuana, Mexico. Armed with tracks of live horns and woodwinds and percussion, he then integrated his beats and analog synths to create a sonic soundscape of the city where he grew up.
Opener "Mi Sospecha" revisits the sonic scenery of late Eighties Avenida Revolucion, where Electro and Banda music would blare out simultaneously out of block after block of strip clubs and balcony bars. "Segunda" has a slinky electro-cumbia groove punctuated with bus route calls and dub inflicted horns. "El Camaron" is a Electrofied cover of an imaginary dancehall Cumbia song from the Seventies. "Sala 14" uses chopped up horns and clarinets from classic Banda songs around a gritty 4x4 beat that crashes into a Low Rider like beat. In "Cancion Digital", rolling horn lines alternate with a vocodered vocal describing the transformation of Mexico's counterculture into the Mainstream over a synth pop beat, before it mutates into a "Remain In Light" Afro groove with layered polyrhythmic guitars. Final track "Ahorita Vengo" was inspired by late night drives through Tijuana, turning it's glimmering hillsides into YMO synthlines, sliding atop a propulsive beat made from processed Tambora rhythm tracks and a bass line fashioned out of slowed down tubas. Ahorita Vengo the track is a summation of the mini album itself: an musical soundtrack for driving the deserted streets of an unknown town, reflecting both a sense of discovery and quiet unease.
