Cluster moved from Berlin to the rural village of Forst just ahead of recording Zuckerzeit, an album which, looking back, clearly marked a turning point. Structured as two solo mini-albums from Moebius and Roedelius, the record introduces rhythm machines, triggered synths and hand-played melodic patterns which was a sharp departure from their earlier, more expansive work. The work was co-produced with a down-to-earth touch by Michael Rother and the tracks are strikingly concise - most are under six minutes, and playfulness often leads over psychedelic sprawl. 50 years on, Zuckerzeit's transparent and utopian electronic miniatures still make for original listening.
