Up for auction here is the debut album by Colosseum ?entitled Valentyne Suite. Released in the Uk in 1969 on Vertigo records?– catalogue number VO1 making it the first album released on the Vertigo imprint. This is a rare first Uk pressing with the Phillips credit on the label and is in absolutely superb condition throughout, a stunning copy.

The vinyl is visually in near mint condition. I am always reluctant to grade this high for a record that is 52 years old but it is simply that good . I cannot imagine there are many copies around in this condition . I have listened to the entire lp at high volume and it is no surprise that the audio is also incredible . The record plays through very nicely without any skips or jumps. There is barely any normal background crackle and overall it was a stunning listen and I would grade the audio as near mint as well. A really brilliant listen.

The Labels are also in stunning condition with a couple of very light barely visible spindle marks .I would grade them as also near mint. This has barely been played and very well looked after.

The Original Gatefold sleeve is an excellent example. There is some very light signs of wear including some wear to the spine where the word suite is not quite legible. I am happy to grade it as Excellent.

The record comes in its original Vertigo inner sleeve which is also in superb condition.

Overall an amazing copy of this classic.

I use Record Collector ratings to grade my vinyl. These are :

Mint: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.

Excellent: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening of sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

Very Good: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration etc..

Fair: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise: it may even jump. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

Poor: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise etc.. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
