North Carolina-born saxophonist John Coltrane was moving at remarkable speed when these Atlantic recordings were made, and it's a moment where his tone seemed to swell into something elemental. The label later assembled the session without his say, yet the music still carries that incandescent early-60s charge, a Technicolor intensity that feels impossible to dim. 'The Night Has A Thousand Eyes' opens with a gust of motion, Coltrane slipping through the harmony with the kind of clarity that makes the tune feel newly minted. 'Central Park West' softens the room, its melody shaped into a quiet, yearning arc. On the reverse, 'Body & Soul' becomes the emotional anchor and 'Equinox' falls into a modal dusk. 'Satellite' flashes out the door, hinting at the far more exploratory language he was already chasing.
