Those of you who have an interest in traditional jazz are probably aware of the impact that Milt Gabler had on this phase of jazz music. Milt started a jazz music store in New York City in 1926 and became the major retail outlet for recorded jazz in the New York area. In 1938 he broadened his participation by issuing and selling jazz records under the Commodore label and continued to so until 1957. Milt's story is fascinating as he was a major factor in all aspects of traditional jazz for many years.
The album listed herein, Vol. 3, includes all Commodore issues from 1945 thru 1957 in a total of 19 records. The twentieth(20th) record includes various alternate takes and other unpublished works which for various reasons did not appear in the first two volumes. Most traditional jazz artists of the 1945-1957 period are included in this collection. Each of these records has been played no more than once and all are in near mint condition. The collection is packaged in two boxes within a large slipcover box. All boxes are in near mint condition as is the booklet containing the liner notes and discography. I acquired this album directly from Mosaic and placed it in my collection of Mosaic albums which ultimately grew to a total of 77.
These 20 records comprise a comprehensive collection of traditional jazz music from the1945-1957 period. Mosaic has indeed assembled and published a boxed set that fully meets the exceptional quality and coverage expected in their reissues.
