Description
It's always a problem grading these lovely old SKA records.
They went to lots of parties.
That means that they're a bit battered and that's why many have names written on the label.
HOWEVER... they're usually cut VERY LOUD and though they look a bit rough, they sound OK (especially if you press the "Mono" button).
This means that a 60's Ska goodie can be perfectly acceptable, even if it looks R.A.A.B.B. (Rough As A Bear's Bottom)..
Please “bear”🐻 that in mind when reading my descriptions.
Here we have a very fine Coxsone Dodd production from 1968 on Coxsone CS-7067, an original 45rpm single with a 4-prong centre.
The “A” side is “Music Like Dirt” by The Lyrics (only it’s NOT REALLY The Lyrics.. it’s actually The Actions, who released “Music Like Dirt” and “No Bother Gwan So” on a Jamaican Coxsone 45).
The “B” side is by The Tonettes (a female-led group who also released stuff on Coxsone as “The Summertaires”) and they’re performing “I Give It To You” in a Rocksteady stylee.
“Music Like Dirt” is DIFFERENT from the song of the same title that was recorded by Desmond Dekker & The Aces, as “Music Like Dirt (Intensified '68)”. That recording appeared on a couple of those mid-price 60’s/early-70’s compilations with sleeve-pictures of ladies who have forgotten to put their vests on.
This Coxsone recording features very enjoyable Rocksteady harmonies, and lots of bass (to wine up yer waist). There’s also a curious “Horse’s Whinny” sound effect which sounds to me like the noise you get when hand-winding recording tape over slightly sticky tape heads. (I was very analogue, back in the day, so you’ll have to trust me on this one).
Conditionwise, well, it’s pretty darn good but it ain’t perfect.
The Tonettes side is clean and tidy, but has some light storage scratches. They appear as an occasional click or clonk, but largely disappear when the “mono” button is pressed.
The Lyrics/Actions side is a bit less delightful, and has more storage marks etc. Again, it plays OK without hop skip or jump and the clicks and clonks are mostly rendered inaudible by use of the “mono” button.
I’ll grade it conservatively (and it’s the ONLY thing that I do Conservatively) as more or less a VG, sounding better than it looks (see photos taken in harsh sideways light).
Buy now or I’ll tell you a Dad Joke.
