The sole album by the Crickets without Buddy Holly and prior to their move to Liberty Records is superior to most of what they did for Liberty, and it's certainly closer in sound to Buddy Holly's late-1950s discs. It's not the same as hearing Buddy Holly: he's a singer/songwriter/guitarist that cannot be replaced. It is, nevertheless, good Tex-Mex rock, particularly on the tunes where Sonny Curtis had a hand in the songwriting. By far the most significant cut is the original version of "I Fought the Law," an arrangement pretty close to that of Bobby Fuller's classic 1966 hit version, but not as full and punchy, particularly in the backup vocals. This LP was definitely influential on the Bobby Fuller Four, as they covered no less than three of the songs: "I Fought the Law," Sonny Curtis' "Baby, My Heart," and "Love's Made a Fool of You," which made the Top 30 in the U.K. The other cuts are not as strong (particularly the covers of "Great Balls of Fire" and "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu"), but they're still honest and true -- something that can't be said of a lot of famous groups that have decided to keep on recording when the star of the show becomes unavailable. The sweet ballad "More Than I Can Say" would become a #2 hit for Leo Sayer in 1980. The German CD reissue on MCA adds six bonus cuts from non-LP singles and outtakes, which are definitely worth having and were otherwise only available on the German compilation Rare Items, 1959-60. These include the original version of "Someone, Someone," taken to #2 in the U.K. by Brian Poole and the Tremeloes in 1964, and "Don'Cha Know," covered by the Searchers.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Blue Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, TEXTURED COVER):

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD (VG).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a completely split top seam. This split seam was  taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a partially split spine (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine

-        Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-        The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover has some minor writing on its back side  (nothing significant)

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        A few minor drop-like stains noted on the front panel (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.
