VERY RARE 1st US pressing White Label Promo MONO issue from 1970
Mono promo editions at this date (1970) were pressed in EXTREMELY small numbers comparative to the stereo promos (which themselves are a small percentage of the total release pressings) - FM radio had become dominant by the time of this release, phasing out the need for promo copies specific to the AM music stations which broadcast a mono signal.
Most of the later period Atlantic/ATCO/Cotillion mono promos were created through the CSG processing system (Compatible Studio Generator - identified on the promo stickers) which was basically a stereo dump-down mix (running both channels into one channel and then redirecting the combined signal back into the two separate channels and compressing the signal in order to eliminate overly dominant frequencies). The ones that did not use CSG required studio-specific mono mixes by staff engineers and often the producers themselves. This is one of those. The result is significantly greater audio dynamics.
The cover normally came with a promo sticker that identified the issue as a 'dj/copy MONO' mix, along with the CSG legend if applicable. This cover does not have a sticker - we believe this is due to its inability to stick properly to the faux-leather cover. However, we have seen a copy with the sticker and there is no identification of the CGS process.
The jacket is the same as that issued with stock stereo copies. It displays the stereo catalog number, SD 7200.
The labels display the unique mono catalog number, 7200 (no "SD" prefix).
CONDITION:
The vinyl is VG+. It has scratches and scuffs on each side from the record being taken in and out of the sleeve. None of these scratches are deep and the vinyl still has a nice shine to it.
