Brief Info: The term ‘beautiful album’ was never more appropriate than for this timeless masterpiece. After the success of Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young joined the trio and instantly became a superstar, the quartet equally so – if only for only a brief time. Déjà Vu sold well, making the top spot in the US and a very healthy 5 in the UK. All four members excel with their own self-written titles, my personal favourites are Young’s delicately sensitive ‘Helpless’, Nash’s beautiful ‘Teach Your Children’ and Crosby’s post-hippy anti-establishment tour de force ‘Almost Cut My Hair’, probably the most powerful song he ever wrote. The album features wonderful harmonies and sublime songs and no album collection should ever be without a copy. Very difficult to find clean examples however, the cover especially is so prone to wear, which is a shame for such a lavish design. This a UK-made example with some rubbing near the bottom areas, but compared to many seen, this is relatively light. Many copies included the heavyweight imported American version which does have any text on the spine. The record appears little played and offers very impressive sound from a well-pressed record manufactured by Philips.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR (or around) EXCELLENT: it could be argued better still for one of the most intolerant and unforgiving covers of its time. An unlaminated gatefold with matt surfaces. The front and back are beautifully, and heavily textured, the inside is smooth. Gold leaf is applied to the front and spine, this lightly embossed. The front picture panel is a paste-on sheet and again delicate. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. The Polydor-style inner sleeve is date-coded 0770 (July 1970).

Cover Front: ‘Difficult’ hardly covers this one – a very dark brown textured surface, with gold block embossed text and a shaped paste-on graphic picture. Firstly, the embossed gold text and details are little short of perfect with fresh shine and nothing eroded or lost at all. The same goes for the graphic panel that remains fully and solidly adhered. The main issue is some rubbing to the bottom area, but little elsewhere with other rubbing only gentle, very patchy and light, also the lack of creasing is always good news. So enough to politely remind of age, but still a very nice looking front.

Cover Back: Largely the same again, rubbing at the bottom, but only patchy and very light elsewhere. The lack of sticker marks, creasing and especially ugly ring wear on this solid brown surface is a huge plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb with hardly anything to fault.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush and flat, with only very gentle and equally patchy rub traces.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with any rubbing only light on these vulnerable storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both quite sharp with any thickening light. Both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced – that goes for the entire cover that has no tipping-in or cosmetic improvements – the record enters on the back.

Spine and Text: An impressive spine with any blemishes few, light and faint. Solid, straight with minimal compression. Folded square, so the edges are flush and virtually parallel. The album’s title in gold block has survived fully intact, which again is quite unusual. Remember, the US version had no spine text. Any surface or fold hinge rubbing also gentle and faint.

Corners: Tip rubbing is mostly quite small and light with very fine to excellent shape largely retained with no heavy knocks, any tip creasing negligible.

Cover Summary: Lavishly made, but unforgiving for wear, and so difficult to find better preserved examples. With most of any wear on, or near the edges and corner tips, few will better this significantly. No for perfectionists, few these days ever will be being honest, but this should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the Polydor-style inner has moderately aged with the usual paper darkening mostly to the seam adhesive areas with the odd small tone spot. Two crisp, untorn window circles, the polylining still clear and reasonably fresh. Date-coded /0770 (July 1970). All edges unsplit with no repairs, some rim impression but avoiding hard creases.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic album plays up to, and mostly even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – with several acoustic songs, the odd contact sound is near impossible to avoid totally – but this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this very early ‘plum’ pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been quite well stored and certainly carefully handled. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
