MEGA RARE CRUISIN' THE 50'S EDDIE COCHRAN "THREE STEPS TO HEAVEN" 78 RPM 12" TEST LACQUERS PRESENTED TO CRUISIN' IN 1996
These Incredibly Rare and Fragile 12" Test Lacquers cut in 1995 are the ORIGINAL ones made for Cruisin' to see if the Award Winning Engineer Sean Davies could create an Original Rich Sound when using a 3mm 78 RPM needle. This is the story of how they were created
Cruisin' were put in touch with Abbey Road Studios, who then advised them to contact a legendary sound engineer named Sean Davies who had worked on 78s in the late 50s when he first started aged 16 in the recording business at IBC Studios. His help was invaluable in creating a rich Mono 78 sound - he had restored a rare original valve amp Lyrec / Ortofon cutting lathe (which blew up first time he tried it) and did four test pressing lacquers to get the right groove depth etc.This Lyrec lathe was also able to automatically put on a locked eccentric run out groove - this was needed by early Jukeboxes to reject the record. The tracks that they needed cutting had to be recorded on DAT tape first for him to use. They had hoped to do their issues in Shellac but this was not possible so they went for heavyweight vinyl like the Top Rank and Pye 78s of the late 50s. Luckily EMI had an old 50s pressing machine and was able to Hand Press each of the subsequent 78s. So after 9 months of preparation and numerous trips to EMI to listen to the test pressings - "Three Steps To Heaven" was finally issued in 1995 on heavy weight vinyl in an individually numbered custom hand silk screened sleeve plus inserts. Within 6 months it was sold out and is very difficult to find now.
Lacquers (which are very similar to Acetates) are made by coating a mixture of Celluloid and Lacquer onto an Aluminium Disc.

When Sean was happy with these Test Lacquers he then cut the perfect MASTER which was used to "Grow" the Stampers used to Press the record.
Sean presented the Lacquers to Cruisin' in 1996.
