THE CRYSTALS
ARE YOU TRYING TO GET RID OF ME BABY c/w
I GOT A MAN
UNITED ARTISTS UA 994 (promo pressing of US single w/alternate label copy)
If this record were a weapon, you'd need a license for it, 'cos baby, it kills! Two sizzling-hot sides show that the Crystals still had a lot on the ball post-Spector. Both tracks are highly favored classics in the Northern Soul community. Here is a GORGEOUS promo copy of this disc, with a different label than you commonly see.
Most typically, the phrase "The Crystals Featuring La La Brooks" appears as one long line, in type almost as large as the song titles. In this scarce variant, "The Crystals" and each song title are in equally large print, while "Featuring La La Brooks" is quite small--comparable to the songwriter credits. I guess they didn't want La La to get too big an ego!
Here's direct-from-disc medley of both sides; the killer Ashford/Simpson "Are You Trying..." followed by the Ray Charles-ish "I Got a Man..."
CONDITION:
VINYL: Label has "15" written on the "I Got A Man" side. Labels are otherwise generally clean. There are some light discolorations to the "Are You Trying" label.
Vinyl, as you've heard, is a knockout. This is a very very clean and pretty copy--possibly the best ever sold on eBay! Don't let this beautiful, very rare variant-label copy slip through your fingers! A solid EX+/M-.
This is just one of a special collection of great PHIL SPECTOR PICTURE SLEEVE 45s and EPs you’ll ever see on eBay—including many European editions! They're all from the legendary collection of DAVID A. YOUNG! Grab ‘em before they’re gone—you won’t see their likes again!
On Mar-03-13 at 19:54:57 PST, seller added the following information: We've included a scan of the more common label layout (which itself is quite hard to find) for comparison purposes only. Please note: That disc (the one in the autographed sleeve) is NOT FOR SALE. Besides being a great two-sider, it's an all-star cast: The A-side is written by Nick Ashford, Valerie Simpson, and Joshie Armstead and arranged by Trade Martin; the B-side is a composition by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell (misspelled Randal here) arranged by Charlie Calello. Both sides are Paul Tannen productions.
