By far the most valuable, from both historical and artistic viewpoints, of all the Chicago Symphony Orchestra archive recordings released over the past decade as fundraising premiums is the latest, ``The Reiner Era,`` a two- disc album containing Fritz Reiner-conducted concert performances that the maestro never recorded commercially and that are now being made generally available for the first time.
The five works--the overtures to Berlioz`s ``Benvenuto Cellini`` and Wagner`s ``Rienzi,`` Vaughan Williams` ``Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis,`` Schoenberg`s ``Transfigured Night`` and the Schumann Second Symphony --were taped at Orchestra Hall in the course of subscription concerts given during Reiner`s fifth season, 1957-58.
