Description
Very Rare 45 by The Cuff Links. Songs are: "Next To You" b/w "Only One I Love". Original machine stamped matrix release on Albert Gaitwood's label Gait Records #1445 out of Brooklyn N.Y. released in 1965. DJ Promo Stamped on Only One Love sides label. Condition is VG (6 to 6+) some surface needle marks, no deep gouges. Plays loud and well.
Alfred Gaitwood started the group in Sacramento, California when he was transferred to McClellan Air Force Base. He started singing with some other airmen in the Service Club and they decided to form a group calling themselves the “Cuff Links”. Early members of the group changed rapidly.
In the fall of 1956 the group went to Los Angeles and auditioned for Dootsie Williams of Dootone Records, with some of the songs that Alfred had been writing in his spare time. Dootsie didn't like any of the songs but was taken by the group; so Alfred composed some new songs, including “Guided Missiles”. At a recording studio in Sacramento, the Cufflinks made a dub of “Guided Missiles,” which they sent to Dootsie, who liked it enough to sign them to a one-year contract. At the ensuing Dootone session, in October of 1956, they recorded “Guided Missiles” and “My Heart”, both written by Alfred. In the late 50's Alfred moved to New York and In 1959 started his own label Gait releasing records by his group The Chev-rons followed by a handful of releases between 1959 and 1967 including this recording by the Cuff Links released in 1965 . Sadly Alfred Gaitwood passed away recently in November 2021 (RIP).
Details about this rarity from the Goldberg site "When Alfred Gaitwood left the Air Force after eight years, he settled in New York. In the late 50s he started his own label, Gait, which recorded the Chev-rons (in which he was a member), Lee Ward, the Jades, the Profiles, Allen Bruce, and the Cuff Links. He released one record by them in 1965: "Next To You"/"Only One Love" ("Only One Love" was also released as The Clicks, with "Teenie Weenie" as the flip). Probably another record by this group was on Palm: "Gee, I Don't Know Why"/"Please Tell Me" (spelled "Cufflinks" on that one).
Grading Scale
10: Mint Perfect record, clean gloss, no marks, beautiful in every way. Very few records will make mint.
9: Mint- Very clean, only a few light marks. A great record.
8: Excellent (VG++) Condition between 7 and 9.
7: VG+ Used, but not abused. Light scratches only. Should play, and look very nice with minimal surface noise.
6: VG Still a nice record. Looks a bit used, light scratches, no gouges, still plays well, some surface noise.
5: VG- A bit rough but will play ok. Fills the collection.
4: G Plays very rough. Has multiple scratches. What a bargain!!
3-2-1: It only goes down from here.
