British rock outfit The Cult hit their tenth studio outing with a record that ties together threads from across their history while still pushing into darker, moodier corners. Ian Astbury's baritone growl carries the set, equal parts mystical and confrontational, offset by Billy Duffy's granite riffs. 'Dark Energy' opens with a swaggering pulse, setting the tone for a collection that veers between brooding post-punk textures and hard-edged heavy rock. 'Hinterland' unfurls with cinematic sweep, while 'Deeply Ordered Chaos' cloaks political rage in churning atmospherics. Elsewhere 'Birds of Paradise' stretches out into six minutes of slow-burning grandeur, and closer 'Sound and Fury' reins it back to a terse, reflective punch. Produced once more by Bob Rock - aptly named, if ever a producer was - the sound is polished but thunderous, giving Astbury and Duffy the space to play out their long-running creative tension. For a band three decades in, this feels less like a retread and more like a consolidation - a reminder of their peculiar chemistry and enduring heft.
