The Cure's eighth album came at the ultimate high point of the Crawley band's influence and popularity, but after the pop success brought by the albums that preceded it, it's a deeper and darker affair that was designed to hark back to the atmosphere of their claustrophobic and bleak fourth LP Pornography. The album spawned a number of successful singles - the lilting 'Lullaby' and the cascading 'Pictures of You' among them - but the album is constrcuted very much as a whole piece rather than a collection of single songs and definitely benefits from start-to-finish listening.
