CUTTY SARK
NIGHT OF THE SADIST / DEAD
Here’s another one of those mysterious records from the Major Bill collection of record labels, this one is on Zuma (home of the Soul Patrol). The band here is Cutty Sark, and their songs are “Dusty” which is marked as the ‘A’ side, and “The Night Of The Phantom.” As with many of the LeCam group songs, these were previously released in other versions, under different names. This is a great combination of soul meets garage.
If you know the song “Dead” by Cresa Watson on Charay, this is the BACKING TRACK for that record. It seems to be the same performance, just as an instrumental.
Hoping to get a little more action into a song that was only a minor hit a few years before by Larry And The Blue Notes, Major Bill Smith took Cutty Sark (aka Zuma) into the studio and had her re-cut the tune. Although the record is titled “Night Of The Phanton” our gal is singing the original lyric to the song “Night Of The Sadist.” Perhaps the Major was hoping for a little controversy. This was featured on the collection “Girls In The Garage, Vol. 5.”
