AFRO-FUNK Pioneers Monster 1972 Debut LP?
Although underappreciated and woefully overlooked, the fine early-'70s outfit CYMANDE was one of the first to merge African rhythms with rock, funk, reggae, jazz and soul. Comprised of members who hailed from such exotic locales as Guyana, Jamaica, and St. Vincent, they only made 4 albums in all. This one, released in 1972, was their first LP.
By the '90s, CYMANDE became the recipient of a strong cult following as the track, "BRA" was included on the soundtrack to Spike Lee's motion picture Crooklyn, and several of their songs were sampled by rap artists (including Raze, Master Ace, MC Solaar, De La Soul, DJ Kool, and the Fugees).
The CYMANDE dudes have more tried and true classics under their belt than many better known 70's funk groups: "Dove", "The Message" and "Bra" (the scene in Spike Lee's 25th Hour where Philip Seymour Hoffman is drifting towards the restroom with the underage girl, with "Bra" blasting from the other room, is incredible) all are Monsters of the form and are how CYMANDE chose to introduce themselves to the world on record (tracks 1, 2 and 3 one Side Two of this LP). All of the three Janus albums are quality stuff. The fourth album, Arrival, on Paul Winley Records varies a bit stylistically from the early ones, but includes the killer jam, "It's Magic", written by Scipio and Patterson -while jazzier perhaps it's right up there with their best.
