On offer is a 1963 LP by CYRIL TAWNEY called BETWEEN DECKS on D.T.S. RECORDS, catalogue number LFX 1.
The debut full-length album by the warm-voiced Navy man Cyril Tawney contains his most celebrated songs, including ‘The Oggie Man’, ‘Sally Free and Easy’, ‘Grey Funnel Line’ and ‘Chicken on a Raft’, which, of course, makes it an indispensable artefact of the sixties Folk Revival. Released in minuscule numbers on D.T.S. Records, the label of the EFDSS. The back cover bears the legend, “In association with THE FOLK SHOP, 2 Regents Park Road, London, N/W.1.”, which is the address of Cecil Sharp House. It was recorded by EFDSS director Peter Kennedy.
The record is NEAR MINT, with still shiny grooves, no scratches, no scuffmarks, no pops, no sticking and no background noise. A few tics is as bad as it gets. The flapjack laminate cover is in excellent condition, with no writing and straight and sharp edges, and just a slight warp towards the bottom of the front cover. There’s also a little stamp on the back, ‘Chappell Group Control’ with a hand-written ‘1/7’. I think it’s a tax stamp with the price, another sign of authenticity. The labels are PRISTINE with no wear, no writing, and minimal spindle marks. It has to be first issue because there was no other issue. It comes in the original paper inner sleeve.

The albums comes from the collection of the late Ian Chappell, director of the Hampshire-based South Eastern Museums Service. A devoted collector of folk music, Chappell would obsessively buy multiple copies of the same record in search of vinyl perfection. They were acquired by the seller at auction from Omega Auctions of Stockport in June 2012.
