ORIGINAL MARIA CALLAS LP: ‘CALLAS MAD SCENES’. Philharmonia Orchestra, conductor: Nicola Rescigno. Label: Columbia. Disc No: SAX 2320. STEREOPHONIC RECORDING. Recording made by EMI in London, 19-24th September 1958. This is the original Columbia silver-label issue; BRITISH PRESSING. CONTENTS: Side 1: Donizetti ‘ANNA BOLENA’: ‘Piangete voi? Al dolce guidami castel natio’ (Act 2); Side 2: Thomas ‘HAMLET’: ‘A vos jeux’, ‘Partagez-vous mes fleurs’, ‘Et mainenant écoutez ma chanson’ (Act 4; CALLAS’S FIRST COMMERCIAL RECORDING IN FRENCH); Bellini ‘IL PIRATA’: ‘Oh! s’io potessi’, ‘Col sorriso d’innocenza’ (Act 2). CONDITION: a few pops and crackles, notably in the Bellini, but o/wise remarkably clean surfaces. COVER: corners with light wear, and v. light soiling plus a v. short pen mark to lower cover, o/wise clean. The inner sleeve appears to be the paper-over-cellophane original, bearing an ad for the ‘Emitex’ cleaning cloth.
