COMMENTS: 

VALENTINO - the People's Calypsonian - with a view to tracing his  development as a calypsonian and a commentator who sings from the  perspective of the struggling man - Black Power advocate; working class  spokesman; Rastafarian. Although Valentino began singing in 1966, the  emphasis will be placed on the period 1971 to 1984 as this is the era of his real success as a calypsonian and the time of his greatest  awareness as a spokesman for the dispossessed.His calypsoes are seldom  played on the air and in the cases his lyrics have been censored and  banned from radio and television broadcasting, his songs have not been  recorded or performed by other artistes. His music, with the possible  exception of Stay Up Zimbabwe, has never been popular at fetes, nor with DJs at 'Blockos'.Yet Valentino remains in the eyes of many the greatest poet in the calypso world, the finest lyricist of our time; the most  prophetic voice in calypsodom, the supreme political commentator, the  most outstanding performer to step unto the modern calypso stage. This  study dedicates itself to removing the negative view of this unique  & remarkable artiste and to showing in a positive light a  calypsonian who is truly a Third World Messenger
