Description
Camberwell Now 'The Ghost Trade' Ink Records INK 19 UK 1st press Vinyl, LP, released in 1986.
The vinyl appears to have been lightly played and is in great shape. It played through beautifully on my stereo - no hop, stick or jump. It is housed in its original sleeve, which has a little wear to the top seam , but is otherwise in good condition, with no other obvious faults. The spine is intact and legible. "The Ghost Trade" is a 1986 avant-prog album by Camberwell Now, blending experimental post-punk, new wave, and progressive elements with politically charged lyrics.
"The Ghost Trade" was released in 1986 through Ink Records and is the debut studio album of Camberwell Now, a band formed from the remnants of This Heat by Charles Hayward, Trefor Goronwy, and Stephen Rickard. The album was recorded between August 1984 and February 1985 at Cold Storage. It features a mix of experimental sound design, tape effects, and field recordings, continuing the avant-garde approach of This Heat while exploring new textures.
The album is classified as avant-prog, but it also incorporates new wave and post-punk influences, creating a unique sound that is both experimental and accessible. Tracks like Working Nights and Speculative Fiction showcase dizzying bass and drum work, tempo changes, and layered keyboards, while maintaining a lean and uncluttered production. Lyrically, the album addresses societal issues, exploitation, and political commentary, reflecting Hayward’s critical perspective on the state of civilization.
Critics have praised "The Ghost Trade" for its challenging and brilliantly realized compositions, highlighting Charles Hayward’s profound lyrical work. While it is less intense than This Heat, it maintains a similar experimental ethos, with the addition of guest female vocals and a slightly more melodic approach.
Overall, "The Ghost Trade" stands as a significant work in the avant-prog and post-punk experimental scene, bridging the legacy of This Heat with new explorations in sound and social commentary.
