“Lady Madonna”
“The Inner Light”
Capitol Promo 45
Capitol P2138 – 1968
"Lady Madonna" was recorded on February 3 and 6, 1968, before the Beatles left for India. It was released as a single, backed with George’s "The Inner Light", in March 1968. The single was the last release by the band on Parlophone in the UK, where it reached Number One, and on Capitol in the U.S., where it reached Number Four. Beginning with “Hey Jude”, in August, 1968, all Beatles releases were on their Apple label.
The piano playing on “Lady Madonna” was inspired by 1950s rock/blues pianist, Fats Domino. Paul recalled in 1994, "'Lady Madonna' was me sitting down at the piano trying to write a bluesy boogie-woogie thing ... It reminded me of Fats Domino for some reason, so I started singing a Fats Domino impression. It took my voice to a very odd place." John helped write the lyrics; the line "see how they run" was included after his suggestion, which was a theme that had been used in the previous year's "I Am the Walrus".
"The Inner Light," was George’s first composition to be featured on a Beatles single. The lyrics are a rendering of the 47th chapter (sometimes titled "Viewing the Distant" in translations) of the Taoist Tao Te Ching.
The Beatles' recording of this song features lead vocals from George and brief backing vocals from John and Paul. The instrumental track was recorded in Bombay, India, during the sessions for George's Wonderwall Music, during January 1968.
