Up for auction is the original Capitol Records set that directly relates to Glenn E. Wallichs, one of the founders and the company’s president. This set features two promotional records released by Capitol Records that are dedicated to two significant events which occurred at a different time and were initiated by Glenn Wallichs. The third item in this set is a unique original Capitol Records corporate postcard with a gold-foil layout on the front containing an embossed image of the Capitol Tower. Inside, the postcard has the Christmas and New Year wishes from Glenn Wallichs. It can be assumed that these wishes are addressed to the team of the Capitol Records pressing plant as the postcard was found during an estate sale in Scranton, PA. Going back to the records, the first 7” 45 RPM EP dedicated to the opening ceremony of the newly-built Capitol Tower in 1956. The original round design of the building by Louis Naidorf was approved by Glenn Wallichs whose photo is located on the back cover of the original hard cardboard picture sleeve together with the Capitol’s Executive Vice President Alan Livingston. The second EP in this set is dedicated to the opening of Capitol Records’ new record pressing plant on Glenn Wallich’s initiative in Jacksonville, IL on July 12th, 1965 in order to meet the increased demand for The Beatles records. This promotional souvenir issue is very rare and considered highly collectible as among the presented Capitol artists it includes The Beatles’ single “I Want to Hold Your Hand”. The picture sleeve of this issue contains a color photo of the Jacksonville pressing plant on the front with the back of the sleeve containing the statements by Glenn Wallichs, who is already mentioned here as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, and Capitol Records’ President Alan Livingston who had already signed The Beatles to the label. Both of these issues were pressed at the Capitol Records plant in Los Angeles, CA, the city where Glenn Wallichs, prior to becoming the president of Capitol Records, founded the famous record store chain Wallichs Music City. In an era when most recorded music was sold through mom and pop stores, Wallichs Music City became the premier record store in Southern California and the world's largest specialty record store. The original picture sleeve of “The Capitol Souvenir Record” is in stunning Near Mint Minus condition, very clean, without having any splits, soiling, writing, wear or residue. The record is graded as Excellent Minus having only a couple of very light non-feelable surface hairlines. The beautiful glossy labels are in Near Mint condition and don’t have any scuffs, wear or spindle marks.

We grade the hard cardboard picture sleeve of “A Souvenir of the Capitol Tower” as somewhere between Strong Very Good Plus and Excellent Minus. It’s in a truly wonderful condition for a 45 RPM picture sleeve that was made in 1956. The sleeve is very clean and doesn’t have any splits, writing or residue. The sleeve has some light signs of use and shelf wear as well as light scuffs along the edges on the back. The record is graded conservatively as Strong Very Good, almost Very Good Plus, having some very light non-feelable surface hairlines and marks as well as scuffs from the original sleeve. The beautiful gold labels are very clean and graded as Near Mint without having any spindle-marks, scuffs or wear. Both records play great with "A Souvenir of the Capitol Tower" introducing the listener to the history of the company, mentioning Glenn Wallichs, and its artists with the beautiful narration in the best traditions of the 1950s while "The Capitol Souvenir Records" acquaints the listener with the most popular hit singles of 1965. The original Capitol Records postcard from Glenn Wallichs dated 1960 is in great vintage condition only having some light tape stains inside, but no residue.
