Don Van Vliet born Don Glen Vliet; January 15, 1941 – December 17, 2010) was an American musician, singer-songwriter and artist best known by the stage name Captain Beefheart. His musical work was conducted with a rotating ensemble of musicians called The Magic Band, active between 1965 and 1982, with whom he recorded 12 studio albums. Noted for his powerful singing voice with its wide range, Van Vliet also played the harmonica, saxophone and numerous other wind instruments. His music blended rock, blues and psychedelia with free jazz, avant-garde and contemporary experimental composition. Beefheart was also known for exercising an almost dictatorial control over his supporting musicians, and for often constructing myths about his life.

Strictly Personal

In August, guitarist Jeff Cotton filled the guitar spot vacated, in turn, by Cooder and McGee. In October and November 1967 the Snouffer/Cotton/Handley/French line–up recorded material for what was planned to be the second album. Originally intended to be a double album called It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper for the Buddah label, it was released later in pieces in 1971 and 1995. After rejection from Buddah, Bob Krasnow encouraged the band to re–record four of the shorter numbers, to add two more, and make shorter versions of "Mirror Man" and "Kandy Korn". The music was already weakly recorded with a trebly thin sound; Krasnow then implemented a strange mix full of "phasing" that by most accounts (including Beefheart's) diminished the music's strength; this was released in October 1968 as Strictly Personal on Krasnow's Blue Thumb label.] Stewart Mason in his Allmusic review of the album described it as a "terrific album" and a "fascinating, underrated release", "every bit the equal of Safe as Milk and Trout Mask Replica".] Langdon Winner of Rolling Stone called Strictly Personal "an excellent album. The guitars of the Magic Band mercilessly bend and stretch notes in a way that suggests that the world of music has wobbled clear off its axis," with the lyrics demonstrating "Beefheart's ability to juxtapose delightful humor with frightening insights". Van Vliet furthered his own mythology through interviews.

Grading Information

M = Mint

Absolutely perfect in every way. Certainly never been played, possibly even still sealed

NM = Near Mint

The record should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either. Of course, the same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and the like. Basically, an LP in near mint (NM) condition looks as if you just purchased it from a record store.

Very Good Plus

VG+ = Very Good Plus

A Very Good Plus (VG+) record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. Slight warps that do not affect the sound (DNAP) are "OK". The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play. In general, if not for a couple things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint. All but the most mint-crazy collectors will find a Very Good Plus (VG+) record highly acceptable.

VG = Very Good

Many of the defects found in a VG+ (Very Good Plus) record will be more pronounced in a VG (Very Good) disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound. Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers.

G = Good

Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good (G) condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear (on a styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn white). A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object.

All records are mechanically washed and vacuumed to insure great sound quality.

We are not perfect and mistakes happen occasionally. If you get what you feel is a mis-graded record, please email us and let us know so the issue can be resolved. We will always work to resole any legitimate issues in a prompt, courteous and professional manner.

Packaging Information

Each disc is shipped in a brand new paper sleeve. The cover is placed in a brand new plastic protective sleeve (excluding box sets) to insure that it arrives safely along with the disc outside of the cover to eliminate seam splits during shipping. Sealed LP's are always shipped intact and unopened.

All LP's are shipped in a sturdy new mailer designed specifically for shipping records with one heavy cardboard insert to help prevent bending. Additional padding may be added at $.30 per pad. Please let us know if you require additional padding. This does not mean that they are bullet proof and at times the postal service can and will break things. When this happens you need to contact your local post office.
