A very unusual item.
A double-sided 10”acetate.
One side features the UK Escorts with the song 'Come On Home Baby'.
The other side has 'something completely different': a demo take of the song 'I'll Love You for a While'.
For a while I've wondered who the singer was, since no such information is given on the label. This particular song was, as far as I know, recorded by only three female artists, Dusty Springfield, Josie Taylor and Jill Jackson. This is certainly different. All of a sudden it dawned on me: this could be the composer herself laying down a demo track. The Dick Charles studio in NY was often used by the Goffin/King partnership to record songs at the time.
I've put a short fragment of this recording on Youtube, with the aim to invite listeners to decide if this really was Carole King herself. So far the verdict is 'Yes!'. Judge for yourself:

Now for the B-side, if you can call it that. 'Come On Home Baby' was the fourth single for the group, not to be confused with the US group of the same name. The group came from Liverpool and featured Terry Sylvester, who later joine the Swinging Blue Jeans, and after that replaced Graham Nash in the Hollies.
The great mystery here is: why this very strange coupling on one record? The only explanation I can think of, is that the Carole King demo had served its purpose (Dusty recorded the song for the Philips label on 22nd January 1965), and that the recording engineers for The Escorts needed a blank acetate to record the Escorts' latest effort on, e.g. to send to the group's management, or their record company. They couldn't find one, so they simply flipped this acetate and used the blank b-side. By the way, the Escorts' single came out in May 1965, and Philips and Fontana were sister companies.
Whatever the story behind it, here it is.
Condition for both sides: perhaps better than you would expect from an acetate this old. Listen to the sample on YT.
