What a wonderful Christmas album! I hadn't realized how unique, creative and musically absorbing this Christmas Portrait album by The Carpenters is until this re-listen. I had purchased this album in the early 1980's and then played it limitedly as Christmas atmosphere music. The album beings with a musical overture of orchestral and choral arrangements of a Christmas song medley featuring Richard Carpenter (co-arranger and producer) and then suddenly we hear the voice of an angel, Karen Carpenter singing "The Christmas Waltz."
The Carpenters' Christmas Portrait is a seamless mix of engrossing orchestration arrangements and vocals of an endless stream of holiday classics. Karen's Carpenter's vocal clarity, timber, and phrasing is of the highest caliber throughout the selections. Each vocal by Karen is a highlight, but her revisiting of Richard Carpenter/Frank Pooler penned "Merry Christmas Darling" is a treasure.
Terrific artwork by Robert Tanenbaum in Norman Rockwell style is suitable for framing.
This LP is from my personal collection and I am its original owner. I handle records with care and play them back on good turntables.
Before listing this LP, I visually inspected it and moreover, enjoyed it in its entirety with a goal, to the best of my ability; provide a subjective evaluation of its condition as played on my turntable and through my audio system.
