Description
There have been several audiophile reissues over the years of this wonderful album and the debate lingers as to which one sounds best. For me this very 1st 1970 UK pressing (ILPS 9135) on the "Pink" Island Records labels sounds best...and in one word the reason is: Balance. While other pressings may have dramatically increased volume levels on certain instruments during the remastering process, this first UK pressing impresses without artificially "tweaking" the master tape. The detail and depth are still there... but are presented in a more balanced and equalized manner. Hence, the music sounds more "natural" and "organic".
Gatefold Cover: Excellent+ .....Made with solid boards....the lamination gleams beautifully on the front and back. A bit of inoffensive laminate lift at the bottom left corner of the back cover. The spine is solid; no tears or splits to the edges. The heavily textured inner gatefold is also impressive...and at the very bottom right one can see, "Printed and Made by E. J. Day Group London and Bedford". This is a very well preserved example.
Record: Excellent to Near Mint....both sides of this heavyweight record shine in a spectacular way. Under strong light there is hardly anything worth noting except for one or two superficial hairlines or marks. The only thing preventing me from giving this record a Mint grade were a few ticks heard halfway on the song, "Sad Lisa". Both labels are bright, pink, and clean. There is an area of imperfection on the Side 2 label (see photos) which obviously occurred during the manufacturing process. I assure you, the audio from this record is stunning from start to finish.
