Description
Very first UK pressing of one of Cat Stevens finest albums......'Tea For The Tillerman'. Originally released in November of 1970 (ILPS 9135) in the UK, this album basically catapulted Stevens to super stardom. And rightly so, there isn't a weak song on this record...and the recording and production (Paul Samwell-Smith) is sensational.
It has taken me many years to find a decent copy to offer on ebay. There are reasons for this. Firstly, the first UK issue of 'Tea For The Tillerman' was only issued for a short time on the initial Pink "i" labels. It is fairly rare and unfortunately, it is only this one that has the impressive and highly detailed audio. Secondly, Island records has a somewhat contradictory reputation. Though some of their [early] pressings are highly sought after by audiophiles and collectors, their pressings are often uneven in quality and plagued with warps, surface noise, and other issues. In other words, you can go through 5 or 6 copies before you find one that is acceptable to keep as an "audiophile" pressing. The one offered here, while not "Mint Perfect", is the best one I've come across in years. If you are well set up and have a decent turntable with a well calibrated cartridge/stylus you will be delighted with this pressing. It is very, VERY close to the audio on Mobile Fidelity's UHQR pressing; while some even feel it rivals it in overall balance and equalization.
Gatefold Jacket: Excellent+.....very little to fault here....inoffensive and minor corner wear...some laminate creases and lift at the back.... hardly noticeable. Inner gatefold is fully and heavily textured and in beautiful condition...possibly the best I've ever seen. The wide spine is nearly perfect with a bit of "compression" at the top end only. Overall....this is a beautiful example. An audiophile inner-sleeve will be included to house the precious record.
Record: Excellent +/- .....very strict grading here. Under strong light, the thick and heavy-set vinyl shines as new and shows only the faintest hairlines to both sides. Both labels are clean and only have a few spindle traces. Of course, due to the many quiet sections on this record, some surface noise is almost unavoidable. Mostly they are heard at the beginning of both sides and in between tracks...it is not loud enough to be called "distracting". Believe me, the audio on this record is simply sensational. A pristine, "Mint" copy might exist....but in over 35 years of collecting...I've never found one.
