In 1979, the then London collective Nurse With Wound released a debut that sounded wilfully cut loose from any recognisable lineage, even as it quietly documented its influences. It was built from tape loops, untreated electronics, guitars left to rot in place and sounds that refuse to settle - and in its wake - the record moves like a collage assembled at the wrong speed. 'Be Prepared' drifts in and out of focus, while the longer passages feel less composed than allowed to happen, ideas appearing, dissolving, then resurfacing misshapen. The infamous NWW list, reproduced here in full, reads less like a boast than a confession of obsession. Decades on, the album still feels oddly confrontational, asking the listener to meet it on its own terms or walk away entirely.
