Up for sale is a rare original release LP showcasing the very considerable talents of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker as well as an outstanding group of side men. This is the ORIGINAL, 10 inch, 33 RPM, mono release!

Chet Baker was born in Oklahoma in 1929. He was a natural talent on trumpet. He dropped out of school at age 16 and enlisted in the US Army (1946-8). After studying music at El Camino College (in California), he left school for good and re-enlisted in the Army, for a chance to play in the Presidio Sixth Army Band. After being discharged in 1951, he got his start with Charlie Parker and Gerry Mulligan. His early career showed such great promise that jazz historian Dave Gelly claimed that Baker was "James, Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, all rolled into one". But drug addiction, and period jail terms, would dog him throughout his life. This album was recorded after Baker was released from the first of his jail sentences. Pianist Russ Freeman (part of his quartet) has been credited as having been a major support, as well as a positive artistic influence, on Baker during this time. At his peak, he was rated higher as a trumpeter than Miles Davis (according to the readers of Metronome and Down Beat magazines) and was also a major success as a jazz vocalist (not featured on this album). However, by the 1960s, he had been arrested multiple more times for heroin addiction, including offenses in Europe that resulted in his deportation back to the United States. Baker hit a bottom in 1966 when he was assaulted and lost multiple teeth, ruining his embouchure. He changed from trumpet to fluegelhorn while adapting to dentures and a new embouchure. Baker's career then underwent something of a comeback. Starting in 1978, he lived primarily in Europe. But in 1988, he died of trauma after falling to the street from a hotel room while under the influence of heroin and cocaine.
