Chi-Congo Art Ensemble of Chicago (Decca 258.054) (France)
1969-70 was the period of Art Ensemble's explosive growth: Living in France, they'd found fertile surroundings for their unique brand of collective improvisation. Following a number of innovative, drummer-less recordings, they took on Don Moye as a permanent member just before Chi-Congo was cut in a Paris studio.
The title track, composed by Favors, "is a bass solo surrounded by the African jungle. You can hear the sleepy forest awake . . . ." It and the rest of the album have the group exploring the richest variety of percussion textures.
In the group's discography, this 1970 recording comes just before Les Stances a Sophie, which took the group in a very different direction.
Personnel: Lester Bowie (tpt, flh, bass d, steel horn); Joseph Jarman (saxes, little instr, perc); Roscoe Mitchell (saxes, little instr, perc); Malachi Favors (b, banjo, log d, cynthar, perc); and Don Moye (d, conga d, temple blocks, tablas, marimba).
LP is Near Mint: No Marks. No spindle wear. Flat edge.
