Description

Up for sale is a very scarce and desirable single (7 inch, 45 RPM vinyl) featuring two great songs by a seemingly unknown female artist.  There has been much speculation that she was actually a member of the Shirelles, singing under a pseudonym.

Artist:   Cholli Maye

Record Label:  Gold Records

Record Number:  212

Release Year:  1963 (according to the website of Discogs)

Produced by "Gordio - Valli" (see comments below)

Arranged and Conducted by "C. Callelo"

A Side (212-A):  You Will Never Get Away (C. Callelo) [Valbo Music Corp., 2:20]

     Wax matrix marks:  "G212-A" (etched)

B Side (212-B):  Cry For Me (Gordio - Valli)  [Valbo Music Corp., 3:01]

     Wax matrix marks:  "G212-B" (etched)

This single was apparently the only recording ever released under the artist name "Cholli Maye".  (Both songs have been included on some compilation albums.)  There has been an online debate as to whether "Cholli Maye" was really Shirley Reeves Alston (i.e. Shirley Owens) of the Shirelles.  This single was apparently very popular in the Philadelphia area and is still played on the air locally there.

The "Gordio" who is credited as "producer" on both sides and as co-writer of "Cry for Me" was undoubtedly Bob Gaudio, who joined Frankie Valli and "The Four Seasons" in 1960 and wrote some of that group's most memorable hits.

The "C Callelo" who is credited as "arranger and conductor" on both sides and as "writer" on "You Will Never Get Away" was Charles Callelo, who was a member of Frankie Valli's original group ("The Four Lovers") and who later returned as musical arranger (and also as bassist) with the "The Four Seasons".
