Clannad – In A Lifetime Galaxy Vinyl Pressing Puck / Vinyl “Biscuit”
A fascinating and genuinely rare piece of modern vinyl manufacturing history.
Offered here is an original vinyl pressing puck (also known as a biscuit or preform) used during the manufacture of the Galaxy Vinyl edition of Clannad – In A Lifetime.
This is not a record but the raw moulded vinyl preform from which a finished LP would be pressed. It remains in its compressed “puck” form and beautifully displays the unique marbled grey, white and black colouring that would ultimately become the Galaxy effect once pressed into the grooves of the record.
Included is one of the production centre labels for Side A from the same project.
What is a vinyl pressing puck?
During the manufacture of an LP, coloured PVC pellets are heated until they become a soft, dough-like material.
This material is then formed into a thick puck (or biscuit), placed between the A and B labels, and positioned inside the record press.
The press then closes under many tonnes of pressure while steam heats the moulds, forcing the softened vinyl outwards into every microscopic groove of the stampers. The labels become permanently bonded to the vinyl during the same process.
The finished record is then cooled before the excess “flash” around the edge is trimmed away, leaving the LP collectors know and love.
This puck represents the stage immediately before becoming a finished Clannad record—a moment rarely seen outside the pressing plant.
