This auction is for a NUMBERED 1of 1  MH  45rpm Test Pressing Sampler for "The Brit Box, Volume II". This box set has special significance and collectability because it comes from Classic Records’ founder Michael Hobson’s personal archive.

 

These highly collectible test pressings are from the first stamper and less than 20 exist. Test pressings reflect the closest you can get to the lacquers and hence have a special collectible value and store of value. ??

Virtually all Classic Records reissue titles were cut at 45 rpm and archived for future use.  In early 1998 Michael Hobson, the founder of Classic Records, decided to “test” the audiophile waters by issuing “The Classic Records 45 rpm Sampler Boxed Sets”. The sets, issued as 45 rpm samplers, included “1S Box Vol 1, 1S Box Vol. 2, Brit Box Vol 1, Brit Box Vol 2 and the Verve Box.  The sets of 10 assorted test pressings – not complete titles (eg. LSC 2405 A2 – the second half of the A side of LSC 2405) were boxed in Classic’s Deluxe Box packaging and sold in very small quantities (less than 10 each).  The Brit Box II 45 rpm sampler presented here is extra special in that it is from the personal archives of Classic Records founder Michael Hobson and comes with a letter of authenticity from Hobson to add to its collectability and future value.

The Brit Box designation was given to denote RCA Living Stereo titles that were recorded and owned by The Decca Record Company in London and licensed to RCA to augment RCA’s Living Stereo series in the early 60’s when stereo was new and after the advent of the stereo phono cartridge.  Decca/RCA titles as they are referred to are among the most desirable to collectors because of their sonic qualities being recorded by Decca in London and because of their scarcity having not sold as well in the US market.
