Cleveland Eaton - Half And Half (Gamble KZ32077)  EX/M- , slrw, 1973

This is by far one of the funkiest jazz albums around. Cleveland Eaton is considered one of the best jazz bassists ever. Eaton was born in Alabama where he started his musical career. Later he moved to Chicago where he became part of the Ramsey Lewis Trio, recording on almost all of Lewis’ big hits. He also did some studio work for Chess records and appeared on such projects as the Soulful Strings’ recordings. Keep It Funky is an appropriate beginning and title to this album with its catchy guitar line and chanting chorus. Next Easton plays a decent cover of Day Dreaming, before hitting another high point with Here Comes Funky You, which sounds a little like Michel Urbaniak minus the fusion because of its violin playing. The first side finishes with two covers, Betcha By Golly Wow and People Make The World Go Round. Eaton again makes a good choice of covers to open the 2nd side with Slipping Into Darkness. Missing You has a great string beginning, while John’s Groove changes the pace and mood with a little more serious tenor. The Love Gangster, Lie and Ah Movin On return to the funky, party feel of the earlier songs. Great album.
